The 2022 Win-E-Mac School District Spelling Bee was held at 9:00 on Tuesday, January 18th in the Arts & Events Center. Fourteen spellers from fifth through seventh grades competed in the Spelling Bee. In the end, Ella Subbert, a sixth-grader, was the champion and will be competing at the Regional Spelling Bee in Thief River Falls on Tuesday, February 8th.
Taking second place was Bella Senn, also from sixth grade. Taking third place was Cora Earls, a seventh grader. In all, 102 words were used in the competition over the course of 14 official rounds (plus a practice round). The championship word was “radiation”.
This yearās District Spelling Bee was one of the most intense in recent memory. According to the official rules, even if thereās only one student who spells correctly in a round, that student still needs to successfully complete a one-word āchampionshipā round. Essentially, this means the champion needs to spell two words correctly in a row to be declared the champion. At one point, Bella was offered a championship word; unfortunately, she spelled that word wrong, so Ella and Cora, who had spelled words incorrectly in the previous round, were back in the competition. Eventually, Ella spelled two words correctly in a row (the last round with Bella, plus the championship round), which allowed her to be officially declared the champion.
